ECG
Same as EKG.
EKG
Electrocardiogram. Graphic record of the heart's electrical impulses. It is used to find out if the heart rate and rhythm are normal or if any damage has occurred.
Echocardiogram
Uses sound waves to check out the heart walls and valves.
Erythromelalgia
A painful dilation of skin blood vessels.
Estradiol (es-tra-DIE-ol)
TRADE NAME: Estrace
TRADE NAME: Progynon
An estrogen that is found in mammals. Estradiol is the most potent estrogen; it is formed in the ovary and, to some extent, the testes . Estradiol is converted in the liver to estrone by 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. It is found in large quantities in pregnant women. Estradiol from the urine of mares and stallions is used to make medical products.
Estriol (ES-tree-ol)
A metabolite of estrone and estradiol. Estriol is converted to estriol 3-sulfate-16-glucuronide, which is excreted by the kidney.
Estrogens (estradiol, estrone, estriol)
are predominately female hormones, and in adults, they are important for maintaining the health of the reproductive tissues, breasts, skin and brain. Excessive estrogens can cause fluid retention, weight gain, migraines and overstimulation of the breasts, ovaries and uterus, leading to cancer. Insufficient estrogen levels can lead to hot flushes, vaginal dryness, rapid skin aging, urinary problems, excessive bone loss and possible acceleration of dementia. An excess of estrogen, relative to testosterone, is thought to play a role in the development of prostate problems in men. Most scientists now agree that by-products of estrogen metabolism are the cause of both breast and prostate cancers.
Estrone (ES-trone)
TRADE NAME: Theelin.
An estrogenic hormone that is less active than estradiol. It is found in the urine of pregnant women and mares. Androstenedione is converted into estrone by aromatase.
