On this diet, normal solid foods such as green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, tomatoes, and peppers must be cooked and puréed to insure progressive healing of the pouch. In addition, if you do not purée your food (no ground meats at this time), it could cause a blockage and produce terrible abdominal pain, vomiting or nausea. Puréed foods are baby food consistency (blended).
Puréed Diet Sample Menu
Breakfast
1 soft boiled, poached, or lightly scrambled egg (mashed)
1/2 carton of light yogurt with 1 scoop of protein powder of your choice. Mix for 1 minute.
Lunch
1/4 cup (2 oz) low fat or nonfat cottage cheese
1/4 cup (2 oz) of canned French cut green beans blended with 1/2 cup low sodium V-8® juice
1/2 cup low sodium chicken broth with pinch of Italian seasoning
Snack
1/2 cup (4 oz) Dole, unsweetened, 100% pure orange pineapple juice mixed with vanilla protein powder of your choice, with splash of fresh lemon
Dinner
1/4 cup (2 oz) diced canned tomatoes, no sugar added, mixed in bowl with 1/4 (2 oz) cup cooked broccoli and cauliflower, and 1/2 cup (4 oz) low sodium beef broth. Season, blend, cook and serve
1/4 cup (2 oz) low fat or non-fat cottage cheese or 1 slice low fat or nonfat cheese (chewed in very small pieces until the consistency of a pasty liquid)
Chew thoroughly. Eat very slowly.
Snack
1/4 to 1/2 skinned Granny Smith apple blended with 1/2 cup (4 oz) 100% pure white grape juice (unsweetened). Pour into shaker with 1 scoop vanilla protein powder of your choice. Shake gently and serve.
Late Snack
1/2 cup (4 oz) skim or 1/2% milk or 1/2 cup (4 oz) Lactaid or soy milk
Important:
Do not overeat or eat too quickly. Remember to wait 15-30 minutes after eating any and all meals and snacks before resuming your water intake throughout the day.
By the 27th postop day, you should be able to consume 55 grams of protein per day during the course of 6-8 meals.
The goal for protein consumption on a full, solid regular diet is a minimum of 85 grams per day.
