Full Liquid Diet-Days 7-13
Unless you are experiencing problems keeping food down, or your surgeon advises otherwise, you will be able to advance your diet on the seventh day after surgery. Full liquids consist of all liquids and some easily digested solids. These foods provide more calories, as well as protein, which is important for healing, fighting infection, and building new cells. Patients are generally required to follow this diet for 1 week.
Protein is found naturally in dairy products, which is plentiful in the full liquid diet. It is essential that you also begin to use a protein supplement at this time, especially if you are lactose intolerant or dislike dairy foods. You should begin to move to a pattern of 6 to 8 meals per day, consisting of foods that are somewhat solid. Examples are listed below.
All liquids, including protein drinks, should be consumed every 1 to 2 hours between meals. Drink 4 ounces of water every hour in sips. You should also begin to take two (2) chewable multivitamin/multimineral complex wafers daily.
For meals, choose from:
cooked cereals (Cream of Rice®, steel cut oats, old-fashioned oatmeal, diluted grits)
no-sugar added, nonfat yogurt (fruit-flavored yogurts should be blended until smooth)
low sodium cream or broth-based soup
sugar free pudding
sugar-free custard
no-sugar-added frozen yogurt
no-sugar-added apple sauce, diluted
Between meals, choose from:
everything on the clear liquids list
milk (skim, 1/2% or 1%)
protein drinks
protein smoothies
sugar-free Carnation Instant Breakfast®
Increase using your protein supplement, or add nonfat dry milk to foods and drinks.
